Job Profile Summary:

The Senior Learning experience designer (LxD) understands how people learn and designs experiences to help them learn better. The successful candidate is passionate about delighting students while they achieve and demonstrate learning outcomes.

The Senior LxD works closely with stakeholders, researching and applying science-informed learning strategies and practices into their designs. They also push the boundaries of the field, seeking new and innovative ways to help WGU students learn.

This position will work with a team versed in rich media, front-end and back-end development, assessment, and writing to guide their designs from inception through launch and evaluation. The Senior LxD exhibits the highest level of expertise and knowledge in the design, development, and advancement of quality learning experiences.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Leads projects for cross-functional, agile teams by developing engaging and effective learning experiences that significantly impacts the student experience
  • Designs learning experiences achieving robust student outcomes in both academic courses and the affective/non-cognitive domain
  • Understands adult learners, under-served populations, and student body and designs experiences accordingly
  • Wireframes actionable learning interactions and iterates designs based on efficacy and usability studies
  • Applies best-practice UX and UI design skills to create proof-of-concepts, mock-ups, and prototypes
  • Works with other developers to ensure technical feasibility of designs
  • Ensures learning design and content development are completed on time and within budget and meets standards of quality
  • Acts as a technical and project advisor by mentoring with peers to apply experience and subject matter knowledge driving best-practice learning experience design and resolution of challenging issues
  • Applies experience and subject matter expertise to the highest level of projects or assignments
  • Models leadership and professionalism
  • Develops and maintains a collaborative relationship with all appropriate internal and external stakeholders
  • Stays current with trends, leading science and innovations, and research in learning science, instructional media, UI/UX and learner behavior.
  • Successfully influences organizational level decisions with team and stakeholders to ensure designs are aligned with desired outcomes
  • Reviews student feedback and provides recommendations for learning experience improvements
  • Participates in research projects to advance learning science and quality improvement for student learning experience
  • Ensures developed curriculum meets or exceeds expected student outcome metrics and improves the student experience
  • Fulfils other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • Extensive experience applying design strategies informed by learning and behavioral sciences, instructional design, and interaction/web/eLearning design principles.
  • Experience in developing and implementing learning experiences / eLearning from ideation through implementation and analysis.
  • Advanced project management skills and “hands on” tactical management of learning experience / product development, agile experience preferred.
  • Excellent written, oral, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative primary research methods.
  • High-level ability to analyze and interpret data to drive future design improvements, direction, and to quantify and validate design effectiveness.
  • High-level understanding of exceptional learning experiences within a student life cycle
  • Proficiency in design tools, such as Invision and Photoshop, to rapidly create both low- and high-fidelity mockups and wireframes.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and creatively in a fast-paced, agile environment.
  • Conceptual knowledge of web/software development and technical infrastructures.
  • Strong attention to detail and a feeling of pride and ownership over the quality of our learning experience.

  • Works to achieve operational targets with significant to major impact on department, Function, or Office results. May be responsible for managing large projects or processes within the department, function, or office.
  • Performs work as directed with limited oversight.

  • Responsible for leveraging a systems-thinking approach, making moderate to significant improvements of processes, systems, and plans within the department, Function, or Office.
  • Problems and issues faced are numerous and challenging, will require detailed information gathering and analysis. Problems typically affect multiple areas or specialties.

  • Collaborates cross-functionally with employees within and outside of the department. Typically has responsibility for communicating with parties external to the University.
  • Works to influence parties within and outside the department, Function, or Office regarding policies, procedures, and practices.

Leadership & Talent Management

  • Is responsible for providing guidance, coaching, and training to other employees in the department, Function, or Office. Responsible for managing projects involving delegation of work and review of others’ work products.
  • Demonstrates the WGU leadership principles in all aspects of service to students, employees, and partners of WGU.

Job Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience with a bachelor’s degree, or 3+ years and a master’s degree, or a doctorate or terminal degree without experience .

Department Specific Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of experience in product design content following a user-centered design process OR, Master’s degree and 2 years of experience in product design content following a user-centered design process.
  • Strong portfolio of learning product/app design.

Program Development

  • This position reports within the Program Development department and works primarily on program and course design projects.
  • Is accountable for the design of products that deliver on the promise of competency-based education to provide efficiency, flexibility, personalization, achievement of goals, and fit with industry expectations
  • *Uses industry and labor market data to select high value skills and competencies for each course design
  • *Delivers thorough and beautiful documentation of the resulting product design to guide development decisions that uphold the integrity of the design as well as provide a historical record for decisions that were made
  • *Defines competencies and mastery levels for assigned courses or modules as well as the strategies for instruction and for assessing competency.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree or higher in relevant field.
  • May have broad knowledge of project management.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
