Job Profile Summary:

While under the guidance of leadership, the data analyst extracts, processes, analyzes, and reports on a variety of data related to WGU degree programs. This individual interacts with academic leaders, curriculum design experts, and data analysts across the organization to continuously analyze and improve course and program performance and student outcomes. This includes a deep analysis of learner profiles, student learning patterns, academic and career outcomes, and course and learning resource quality.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes and interprets diverse sets of educational data using a variety of statistical methods.
  • Uses SQL, Python, R, or Scala to clean, manipulate, and transform data for analysis.
  • Reports, explains, and presents statistical analyses using graphs, charts, and tables.
  • Applies understanding of learning science to develop methods for measuring student learning and engagement.
  • Uses understanding of data collection to design and implement new methods of measurement.
  • Stays informed of emerging trends in learning science, learning analytics, and data science.
  • Clearly communicates with users to assess needs and requirements for data products.
  • Designs and maintains Tableau dashboards.
  • Pitches value of potential data products using functioning proofs-of-concept.
  • Works across academic colleges and programs to provide valuable data-informed insights on trends of performance metrics.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • Strong written, oral, presentation, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to explain the significance of data and trends to stakeholders
  • Ability to manage tasks independently while working in a team environment
  • Ability to use SAS, R, or Python to run multivariate and other statistical analyses
  • Ability to create data dashboards and visuals using a tool like Tableau
  • Ability to create datasets for analysis & reporting using SQL, Python, R, or Scala.
  • Ability to explain analysis results to non-technical audience
  • Ability to manage multiple ongoing data projects

  • Works to achieve operational targets with significant to major impact on department, Function, or Office results. May be responsible for managing large projects or processes within the department, function, or office.
  • Performs work as directed with limited oversight.

  • Responsible for leveraging a systems-thinking approach, making moderate to significant improvements of processes, systems, and plans within the department, Function, or Office.
  • Problems and issues faced are numerous and challenging, will require detailed information gathering and analysis. Problems typically affect multiple areas or specialties.

Communication & Influence:

  • Collaborates cross-functionally with employees within and outside of the department. Typically has responsibility for communicating with parties external to the University.
  • Works to influence parties within and outside the department, Function, or Office regarding policies, procedures, and practices.

Leadership & Talent Management

  • Is responsible for providing guidance, coaching, and training to other employees in the department, Function, or Office. Responsible for managing projects involving delegation of work and review of others’ work products.
  • Demonstrates the WGU leadership principles in all aspects of service to students, employees, and partners of WGU.

Job Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience with a bachelor’s degree, or 3+ years and a master’s degree, or a doctorate or terminal degree without experience .

Department Specific Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors’ degree in learning science, data analytics, behavioral or cognitive psychology, statistics, or a closely related field
  • 2+ years of experience in data analysis and visualization
  • 1+ years building dynamic, interactive dashboards
  • 1+ years working with relational databases

Preferred Qualifications:

  • May have broad knowledge of project management.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
