Improving patient care is a complex process the requires crucial links among medical providers, the technology and data systems used to track and utilize patient info, patients, payers, and regulatory agencies. Maintaining the quality of medical records is of utmost importance for individuals and for the healthcare system at large-and it is one of the areas of healthcare with the greatest opportunity for growth and improvement.

WGU Instructor Overview

Student learning is the primary responsibility of Western Governors University (WGU) faculty. Instructors are subject matter experts who teach and mentor students when students engage in their assigned courses. Instructors vary the type, length, and intensity of instructional method based upon student needs. Instructors work on a team to support an assigned group of students and offer specialized instruction on challenging topics. Using applicable technology, Instructors interact with students in both group and one-on-one settings. As part of WGU’s disaggregated faculty model, Instructors provide their expertise and collaborate with the faculty who are responsible for developing and evaluating courses and assessments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Five years of experience with an emphasis on healthcare industry billing, reimbursement, and/or insurance-related functions
  • Three years of experience providing instructional delivery to learners in an online, higher education environment
  • MBA, MS Accounting, MS Finance, MS Health Information Management or a applicable area

Preferred Qualifications

  • Healthcare industry certifications in Accounting or Finance [e.g. American Medical Billing Association Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist (CRMA)]
  • Registered Healthcare Information Administrator (RHIA) certification with current healthcare industry in billing, reimbursement, and/or insurance-related functions
  • Doctorate degree

Schedule/Working Conditions

  • Maintain the ability to keep an assigned schedule for 20 hours/week that supports learners during peak times weekday evenings and weekends. (max 25 hours/week @ peak times) Sunday to Thursday or Tuesday to Saturday.
  • Arrange a set schedule with the supervisor, which is normally not flexible, based on the needs of WGU and its students.
  • Work primarily from home in the continental U.S. and is available to travel to meetings on a few possible occasions if/when required.
