The Director, Advancement Marketing & Communications is the driving force in the creation and execution of strategic communications and marketing plans that build the brand of the organization. You’ll work collaboratively within Advancement and across WGU to design a comprehensive, omni-channel marketing and communications strategy that tells the story about the impact of philanthropy at WGU, inspires engagement, and motivates philanthropy. Drawing on your experience and expertise you’ll develop, manage, and implement marketing and digital communications philanthropy and engagement efforts both broadly, and for specific events or audience segments. And, in coordination with colleagues, will develop marketing strategies that offer engaging content and messaging through the development and use of specific, targeted channels, and the utilization of the Advancement website or other platforms which personalize and improve experiences for WGU constituents.

This is a remote position that can be located anywhere in the 48 US States.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Deliver impactful philanthropy and engagement storytelling by contributing to concepts, designs, and execution of multi-channel solicitations, donor services, stewardship, and engagement communications. These narrative opportunities across email, direct mail, video, social media, constituent outreach, gift proposals, case statements, newsletters, and talking points are appropriately segmented to engage multiple audiences and drive donor growth.
  • Develop marketing and communications strategy for Advancement in collaboration with key cross-function stakeholders, serving as a primary liaison between WGU Advancement and other WGU departments (such as External Communications, Marketing, Internal Communications, and Alumni), affiliates, and entities. Including identifying, pitching, developing, and writing philanthropy and engagement content for WGU’s media channels – coordinating a strategy for curating content that maximizes opportunities to inform and inspire philanthropy and engagement.
  • Maintain and establish professional working relationships and communication with constituents/donors, project sponsors, service providers, and outside contacts, managing and supporting internal and external communication for WGU Advancement.
  • Collaborate closely with Annual Giving Directors and Donor Relations and Stewardship Manager, implementing high-quality fundraising campaigns and initiatives.
  • Contribute to processes for multiple projects to ensure editorial and design standards and oversee quality control systems for consistency, clarity, quality, and approvals of Advancement communications.
  • Create compelling content and imagery (through collaboration with web designers, video producers, and photographers) for various initiatives (e.g., fundraising collateral, gift announcements, impact reports, event talking points, impact fund appeals, websites, etc.) that move people and partners to action.
  • Perform thorough research and analysis to ensure the most effective solutions and methods are employed and continuously stay up to date on all trends regarding technologies and applications on the market. Clearly communicate constraints, conflicts, requirements, compatibility issues, and items that could affect project outcome, final performance level, or customer satisfaction. Offers appropriate alternatives and contingency plans.
  • Monitors pertinent vending contracts and manages project budgets. Approve pay requests and change orders.
  • Responsible for all print, web, and social media communications.
  • Represents WGU Advancement at donor activities and events when necessary.
  • Brings creativity and joy to connecting with our donors and celebrating giving.

What you’ll need:

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • Experience guiding multiple projects and working and collaborating across multiple teams, building agreement, and influencing stakeholders.
  • Ability to use analytics to inform decisions; strong research and electronic communications skills including interpretation of data and trends.
  • Demonstrated experience in digital marketing, broadcast email systems, and web content management systems.
  • Creative and strategic thought process with the drive to work independently and track record of collaboration and innovation.
  • Ability to develop and implement processes and procedures.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, Photoshop, Canva, InDesign, and Adobe.
  • Knowledge and use of standard project management methodologies.
  • Exceptional writing skills and ability.
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience using CRM database solutions, preferably Salesforce

Job Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline.
  • Eight (8) +years of work experience in communications and marketing with specific emphasis on leading, managing, and measuring marketing initiatives
  • 5+ years of work experience in complex settings with multiple stakeholders.
  • 3+ years professional advancement/philanthropy experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the nonprofit sector
  • Professional experience in higher education
  • Master’s Degree in Marketing and Communications


  • Up to 10% travel

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
