Job Overview
Cyberinfrastructure Engineer, Minority Serving-Cyberinfrastructure Consortium (MS-CC)MS-CC envisions a transformational partnership to promote advanced cyberinfrastructure (CI) capabilities at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), and other Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). This will be accomplished through workforce development opportunities, collaboration, research computing, and establishing capacity-building connections among institutions. The MS-CC is currently funded through a National Science Foundation grant award.

The MS-CC is searching for an individual that is deeply committed to effectively recommending, implementing, and maintaining cyberinfrastructure solutions that advance academic research at HBCUs, TCUs, and other MSIs.

This position serves as a Cyberinfrastructure Engineer within the Minority Serving – Cyberinfrastructure Consortium (MS-CC) and will be responsible for building, maintaining, and supporting cyberinfrastructure compute storage, and networking infrastructure in on-premises and public cloud environments for MS-CC directed projects. In addition, this position will work closely in a consultation fashion with researchers and other IT staff across a broad range of disciplines to recommend existing solutions and be an advocate for unmet cyberinfrastructure needs within MS-CC participating institutions. This position collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to develop and operate shared cyberinfrastructure services as well as develop shared practices.


  • Creating and maintaining training materials for research computing related software and hardware;
  • Conducting training
  • Evaluating, installing, upgrading, and maintaining scientific software;
  • Consulting with researchers on the development and migration of scientific workflows to a high-performance research computing environment.
  • Participate as a member of a highly technical and customer-service driven team.
  • Readily share knowledge and training with MS-CC members, and forge close working relationships with scientific research groups across participating member institutions.
  • Conduct investigations and tests of complex scientific software systems to enhance performance or to investigate and resolve matters of significance.
  • Investigate new technologies and techniques of importance to researchers.
  • Participate in developing computational pipelines, computer algorithms, and data analysis for ongoing research projects at multiple MS-CC institutions.
  • Serve as a technical consultant for sponsored research projects that require high-performance computing, storage, and networking services.
  • Assist in the development of workshops and one-on-one technical assistance and training to faculty, staff and students in the use of a shared high-performance computing environment and associated scientific software.
  • Will work in collaboration with other groups to develop programs, training/education, and other resources around key technologies and platforms.
  • Work with domain experts as well as technology experts to understand and capture key patterns and practices for platforms, tools, and techniques; document these for the broader research community, and work within the community to share these resources (e.g., through writing, speaking, presentations, etc.).
  • Help increase the presence of Research Engagement in communities such as CaRCC, PRP, or others; and will help build the strength of partnerships with these and other peer organizations.
  • Contribute to the communications work of the Research Engagement group, including writing, speaking, and presenting at community events.
  • Provide expertise by answering and addressing researcher’s questions, refer more advanced questions to experts internal and external to Internet2, and engagement support to the researchers and communities that Internet2 serves.
  • Help Internet2 better understand how we can support researchers by engaging with internal teams to help them better bridge their programs to the research community.

The qualified candidate will have the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, relevant experience. Master’s degree (or Master’s degree candidate) preferred.
  • 8 – 15 years of experience in Information Technology, Research Computing or related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience building, maintaining, and supporting cyberinfrastructure compute storage, and networking infrastructure for an institution of higher education
  • A strong grounding and demonstrated experience in information technology principles, tools, and techniques, including research computing (traditional and cloud computing), research data management, and associated IT domains.
  • Deeply committed to supporting and advancing Academic Research through the effective use of IT.
  • Demonstrated experience working with researchers across a range of domains and disciplines, including practices of listening, analysis, and synthesizing knowledge for sharing with a range of audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience working in collaborative teams and partnerships; good organizational and community facilitation skills.
  • Excellent communications skills, including strong writing as well as oral and presentation skills; an ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner; and a demonstrated capacity to work effectively in both face-to-face as well as remote (telepresence) contexts.
  • Working knowledge of campus cyberinfrastructure.

Preferred capabilities: 

  • Expertise with network and data movement tools and how they are used on campus, regional, national, international, and cloud networks.
  • Familiarity with Trust and Identity services, and Security and Privacy issues as they relate to academic research activities and workflows.
  • Familiarity with Internet2 and its ecosystem of engagement.
  • Experience with the challenges of Research Computing and Data across a range of domains, including Physical Sciences; Life Sciences; Engineering and Computer Sciences; Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences; and Arts and Humanities.
  • Experience working with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and/or Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs).

This is a full-time position which will include competitive compensation and benefits package. The Cyberinfrastructure Engineer will report to the MS-CC Program Director, and work closely with the MS-CC CI Facilitator. This is a fully remote position, travel to institutions participating in the MS-CC and regional/national meetings will be expected several times per year.
