About this role:

The Institutional Research (IR) department at WGU is a group of talented analysts, researchers, data engineers, and data scientists who provide data analytics and data-driven decision making at Western Governors University.  The IR department prides itself in being a collaborative, non-competitive group that is encouraged to innovate.  Currently, the primary tool sets of the group include Databricks, Oracle SQL Server, and Tableau.  We are a geographically dispersed team of curious, open minded, data driven people who are excited about WGU’s mission to provide affordable, competency based post-secondary education that improve students’ lives.

What you’ll do…

  • Perform data discovery and analysis.
  • Design data models for data capture and ETL.  Code and perform unit testing of developed code.
  • Perform quality assurance tasks to ensure accurate and complete data reporting.  Design process and business audits for data quality.
  • Team with relevant stakeholders to understand data insight needs.
  • Develop and deploy complex BI reports and dashboards (primarily using Tableau).  Use data visualization and UX skills to present insights clearly and concisely.  Manage change requests.  Provide guidance and explanations on metrics and visualizations.
  • Troubleshoot data issues.
  • Prepare ad-hoc analyses with varying degrees of complexity and delivery requirements timelines.
  • Develop KPIs for continuous improvement of successful student experience.  Complete root cause analyses.
  • Create and maintain documentation about data definitions, metric explanations, and visualizations to promote university wide alignment and consistency in reporting.
  • Identify automation opportunities.
  • Travel on limited basis for conferences/summits ( < 10%).

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • Advanced SQL programming skills (Spark, Oracle environments preferred).
  • Strong Data Viz Developer skills (Tableau preferred).
  • Advanced MS Excel skills.
  • Knowledge of relational databases, data lakes, and data marts.
  • Expertise in understanding, manipulating, and querying large data sets with complex file structures.
  • Understanding of PII data, data security, and data privacy considerations
  • Able to explain complex data and research issues in a professional manner with technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Leverages strong business analysis skills and able to think systematically.
  • Able to work independently, is self-motivated, and is a strong team player.
  • Is organized and pays attention to detail.
  • Able to manage time between ad-hoc and formal reporting work with changing priorities.
  • Able to work under pressure.
  • Possesses a continuous improvement mindset.  Is a lifelong learner.

What you’ll need…

Department Specific Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science/Analytics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Management Information Systems, or a related quantitative analysis field of study.
  • 2+ years of related BI analyst / developer experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of related experience, or an advanced degree without experience.

Nice to have…

  • Higher education domain experience.
  • AWS Cloud Technologies knowledge.
  • Agile methodology experience.  JIRA skills.
  • SharePoint development experience.
  • Experience using Collibra.
  • Experience using Thought Spot.
  • GitHub or other version control software experience.
  • Programming in Python or R.
  • Forecasting, machine learning, or predictive modeling knowledge.
  • Statistics skills.
  • Knowledge of qualitative research analysis, methodologies, and best practices.
